Good value, good operation I bought this unit refurbished asindicated. I was worried about the possibility of it not coming withthe most recent map updates (see the reviews for the TomTom ONE XL-Srefurbished unit), but I went ahead and bought it anyway since I wasbeing frugal. The GPS came packaged nicely and did not have anyblemishes or anything on it. I used it for the first time on a severalday trip to Phoenix, where I really got to experience the functionalityof the device.Some good points:-- the 4.3" screen is nice, and I would recommend this screen size over the 3.5" models.-- the set-up is relatively easy (which was great since the instruction manual is a joke!).-- TomTom has a pretty cool website (TomTom HOME) for you to use to get necessary updates your GPS, download accessories, etc.Some bad points"-- the instruction manual is a joke. Thankfully, I had a vague sense of what to do because I'd used a GPS once before.-- the car adapter plugs in to the bottom of the unit in a way that is a bit unwieldy and awkward.-- you can only get the street names spoken with thecomputer-generated voice. If you chose any of the more human-soundingvoices, the street name function will not work.-- whenever you download a new map or map update, you lose yoursaved favorites. You have to manually re-enter them or save the filefrom before you updated.-- it took forever for me to figure out how to cancel adestination once I was already en-route. Since there is no help in theinstruction manual, I just had to start pressing areas of the screen toget the device to take me to the right menu screen!-- AND VERY IMPORTANTLY: The unit I received came with a map thatwas 4 quarters (i.e., one year) old. This was a risk based on someother reviews, even though the product description said the devicecomes with the most updated map or comes with the latest map guarantee.So, I read up on the other TomTom refurb units that Amazon sells, andpeople were saying that it was relatively easy to get TomTom to giveyou an updated map. So, I called the customer service line and talkedto a rep. He said that I needed the map guarantee certificate that camein the box, but I did not receive one. (FYI: some reviewers of therefurbished TomTom ONE XL-S unit said they got this in the box alongwith their GPS). Since I didn't have a certificate, the rep said it wasunlikely I would get a new map. However, I was determined to get myupdate, so I pressed a bit further. The rep said maybe I could justsend in my proof of purchase (Amazon receipt) and we'll see whathappens. (You can fax it or send it as an attachment through awebsite.) I did that, and lo and behold, I got an email message theNEXT DAY saying that my map update had been uploaded to my TomTom HOMEaccount. I downloaded it the next day without any problems. So, despitethe reluctance of the customer service rep, I got my new map!Overall, the unit works well, though the spoken street names can bebit hard to understand at times. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could.best bang for the buck bought this unit for the wide screen andstreet name instructions feature - have used for two vacation trips tounfamiliar areas and so far it is everything I expected. Very accurate,good instructions, good street name pronunciation and very quickrerouting if wrong turn taken.First unit I received had out of date maps which tommtom would notupdate for free, but Amazon quickly shipped me a replacement unit thatupdated maps free at tomtom home with no problem. Amazon really standsbehind the items I have purchased through them.BAIT & SWITCH - DECEPTIVE Urge no one buy this refurbished product if you really have to depend on it. No savings from "NEW" product, because: 1. Maps need to be updated at a substantial cost, exceeding thecost of a "NEW" product. If you don't depend on updated maps, then thiswould be perfect GPS for you.2. Limited warranty of six (6) months vs normal warranty of one year.3. Hasseling with the customer service to find out that unit doesnot come with updated maps. Amazon printed review by R.Ned on June 8,2009 that said he got the update from TOM TOM Customer Service. Delorme PN-40 ReviewI must say that I find it interesting that there are so manyglowing reviews about this flawless GPS. I am always skeptical ofanything that sounds too good! I read many of the reviews online, andafter evaluating the specifications and features, opted to buy theDelorme PN-40. Prior to this purchase, I owned a Garmin 60CSX GPS. Ibelieved that the Delorme was poised to be a significant improvement inboth the tracking ability and the display of aerial overlays.Let me begin by stating that I don't believe there is a perfect GPSexcept from the perception of the user and their application. If itmeets your criteria, then it serves the intended purpose! That beingsaid, let me try to summarize my personal observations from my point ofview.After purchasing the Delorme PN-40, I quickly signed up for the$29.99 annual download service to take advantage of this impressivefeature. I have downloaded about a dozen maps at this posting and mustsay that Delorme has been very effective in minimizing the number ofmaps that can be downloaded. First, the size of the maps you candownload for each map type (color aerial, USGS, etc..) is restricted tosome size in sq Km. This isn't too much of an issue as they are largeenough for my typical hike. Second, I have found that the downloadspeed is being limited to speeds on the order of 15-20Kb/s. This isincredibly slow considering the capability of cable is in excess of700Kb/s. A typical download time for the maximum 250sq/km file is over1.5hrs. In addition, many of the downloads stop prematurely, and thisrequires you to download the entire file again (a download managerisn't able to resume the download after termination). I have spent daystrying to download a single file due to premature downloads (and no, mymodem and router aren't the cause!)The learning curve for uploading the map files to the PN-40 istricky and not documented very well. It took me (I'm an electricalengineer) about 4 hours to sift through the documentation along withsome trial and error. Once downloading was accomplished, I found thatthe display of the maps was pleasing, but lacked detail.I then took the Delorme PN-40 and Garmin 60CSX (Sirf Star IIIchipset) on a 9 mile hike in Forest Park located in Portland Oregon. Iused fresh Powerex Medion batteries in both GPS's. The temperatureoutside was about 35degF and the hike took approx 5 hours. My findingsare as follows:The Delorme PN-40 took several minutes longer than the Garmin 60CSxto lock onto the satellites before a 3D view was possible. The Delormecircle of uncertainty, accuracy of the location, varied significantlywhile standing in the same spot on open terrain with no obstructed viewof the sky. The variation would be on the order of +- 15ft to +-40ft.The Garmin locked onto the signal vary consistently for this samelocation with variations of only +-2ft. I found the aerial display onthe Delorme to be difficult to see without the backlight. Note that theisobar lines aren't easily seperated from the aerial background. It mayjust be me, but I'm not color blind and have good vision. The Garmindisplay is easier to see, I think, because there isn't much clutter onthe display (the backlight helps very much in low light also). TheDelorme tracking lines are superb! It is easy to see where you havegone and is nicely color contrasted to the background map. The Garmintracking points are almost impossible to see (until downloaded to yourPC) as they blend into the topo map! The last point I want to makeconcerns the battery life, and this was the biggest issue for mypersonal use. The Delorme battery life was barely acceptable (for mypurposes) under the conditions of this hike (cold and wet for 5 hours).The battery indicator on the Delorme started dropping after about 2.5hours and declined steadily for the remainder of the hike. The lasthour of the hike I expected the Delorme to shut off, but the batteriesdid hold out for the full hike. The Garmin battery life remained atfull for the entire hike. You can argue that my test wasn't exactlyfair since the batteries weren't brand new and don't know how often Iused the backlight, but I didn't expect the Delorme to start indicatingreduced battery power so soon. A sample size of one unit is not exactlya great indicator of all the units sold, but then I'm not being hiredby anyone or trying to take sides! Obviously, you must be the decisionmaker for your application.I will say that both products performed well enough for this onehike. I prefer the Garmin for satellite reception, consistent locking,battery life and ease of software use. However I do like the displaycapabilities of the Delorme. Also, the Delorme mapping is far superiorto Garmin, but at the expense of a steep learning curve. I also want tomention that Delorme did a great job for allowing use of every batterytype you might want to use; from lithium ion to alkaline. Also, Ireally appreciate Delorme giving easy access to the full capacity of a32Gb SDHC card (which I verified worked well), but you do need plentyof storage for the hybrid aerial maps.In summary, let me say that in my opinion I feel that Garmin hasthe lead on GPS hardware and that Delorme has the lead on Mappingsoftware. I would love to see a product created by the merger of thesetwo companies to take advantage of both of their strengths. Good luckon your purchase decision.Note that I am not an employee of either company, and have nopersonal bias towards them. I also own products from both companies!Simply an amazing GPSr. True paperless caching!I received my new DeLorme PN-40 GPSr the other day.First off, let me state that my previous GPSr was a basic Etrex. Itwas pretty weak, but helped me find lots of geocaches. Now, keep inmind two weeks ago I had NO intention of getting a DeLorme. I waspretty set on getting the Garmin Oregon, and had just an inkling of thePN-XX's. So, I headed on over to the DeLorme forums and posted somequestions. The level of attention I received from the members as wellas employees of DeLorme really impressed me. Couple that with a DeLormeemployee's blog post which pretty much seemed to be a direct answer tomy questioning about Mac support, and I was sold. I'm willing to wait amonth for limited Mac support, and know that they are working towardsmore support down the road.So, onto my first impressions. This might not have the bells andwhistles aesthetically of the Oregon (by this I mean large touchscreen, lack of buttons), but it ROCKS. I really have nothing tocompare it to other than the Etrex, but it is FAST, fast, FAST! I'veheard the PN-20 took a while to render maps and create routes. Thisrendered maps real-time while I was driving. It only took a few secondsto calculate a driving route. Really amazing. On top of that, it tookquite a few minutes from a cold start to acquire a 3-D fix, but once itdid, every restart after that had an almost instant fix. Literally, Iturned it on and it acquired a fix.The driving directions were very accurate, and the beep wassufficient for me to know to turn. If I had the travel kit, I couldkeep the backlight on in the dark, and have no problem finding my wayto other addresses. Speaking of addresses, the maps that come with thisare GREAT! So easy to load the pre-cut area maps that come on theaccompanying DVDs. I haven't tried to cut maps online yet, but I planon grabbing a bunch of satellite imagery, as that is one of the keypoints that sold me on the PN-40.Now, onto the main reason I wanted a new GPSr, geocaching. TheEtrex served its purpose, but sometimes I would be walking around anarea for over an hour, with the GPSr jumping all over the place. Withthe PN-40, it took me right to the cache. I had already read the hint,so I thought I knew where it was. The GPSr showed that I was only 2feet from where I thought it was!!! Unfortunately, I couldn't find itat first, so I keep looking, and finally I find it a couple of feetfrom where I was first looking. I look at the PN-40, and sure enough itwas registering 0 feet. Maybe this was beginner's luck, but I wasimpressed.I am simply AMAZED. This was the greatest geocaching experience Ihave ever had. I loaded Color Aerial Imagery onto my PN, and it wasliterally like i had Google Earth as GPSr. I viewed all my caches onthe map, scrolled to one I wanted to hit, and routed to it. It was soaccurate it was scary! I was in heavy foliage at times, and it neverlost a 3-D connection. It wasn't jumping all over the place like my oldGPS did. This was steady! In fact, I think the biggest problem is thatthe people who placed the caches had a less accurate GPS, thus throwingoff the coords slightly.I had the PN auto-routing for roads to each cache. Once I got tothe area, I just let the GPS lead me to cache. Some of the caches Ididn't even read, I just made my way to the area and found it.I'm already having a lot of fun with this. It's a big change frommy Etrex. My biggest concern was that I would have buyers regret andwished I bought the Oregon. So far that is not the case. Once I startloading all kinds of different maps, which come with the GPSr (and for$29.99, I can get a year subscription of unlimited map downloads oftheir online maps), I don't see how the Oregon can even compare.I could not be happier with my purchase of this treasure! I amreally amazed how the PN does everything! I can't wait for the nextfirmware update to get the enhanced geocaching features. The PN-40 canonly get better.BTW, 7 for 8 caches today, and the one I couldn't find was definitely gone.Great job DeLorme!Delorme Puts It All Together For Hiking GPSI had a chance to try the PN-40 extensively on a recent off-traildesert hiking trip. The unit performed flawlessly, and though I'mpretty picky about features, at the end of the week, I still didn'thave a wish list.Delorme's new high resolution color aerial imaging is a realupgrade from it's previous topo and "satellite" imagery. Comparing sideby side with Google Earth, Google has a slight edge on resolution, butit's pretty close. And for a mobile GPS, the resolution is more thanyou need, and you can zoom up on details that provide more than enoughdetail. Delorme's new subscription pricing option of $30 for a year'sworth of unlimited map downloading is a much better pricing model thanthe old "pay as you go", which got expensive fast.The PN-40 is fast, both in GPS acquisition and map re-drawing. TheGPS continued to track while in my pocket. It acquires a fix afterbeing turned on often within 30 seconds. The map re-draws are not silkysmooth if you set it to always orient "heading up" as it constantlytries to adjust to your varying direction. But in "north up" and"course up" mode, where the map is static and your arrow is moving, theunit is very easy to use. And zooming in and out is almostinstantaneous, which is much faster than older handheld GPS models withhigh resolution aerial maps.Planning routes and waypoints on the included Topo software is aneasy way to plan hikes, though you can also pick points on the littlescreen on the unit if you don't have a computer nearby. That's a slowerprocess as you have to use the four-direction round button, which isnot that easy to nagivate around extensively.The unit is rugged, with high impact, tough plastic on theoutside, and a battery case the screws tight with finger screws to makeit water resistant.The unit is easy to use but has a whole lot of layers ofcomplexity if you want to do more. It took me several days of heavy usebefore I felt I knew all the menu options. There are a lot of ways tocustomize the unit, which is probably why I didn't feel I wished formuch at the end of the hiking week.Though you could use this for auto routing, I find my regular autoGPS a lot easier to use for that. But for anything off roads, such ashiking or jeep riding, this unit is really great.Here's a few tips I learned using it:1) Sometimes the unit will not be recognized by my computer when Ifirst hook up the USB cord and turn it on. For some reason, if I justturn the unit off, wait a bit and then back on, the computer recognizesit on the second try.2) Don't be afraid to turn up the display brightness to fullbrightness. It's a lot easier to see in the day, and since the unitruns on two AA batteries, it's no problem if you need to switch themout. I found that two AA batteries lasted a day and a half at fullbrightness with the display set to automatically turn off after 30seconds of no use.3) I scratched the screen with my car keys in the same pocket, so watch out for the screen and sharp or metal objects.Portable high resolution GPS has finally become reality. I reallyenjoyed my hiking trip, being able to plan complex routes in advance,and see exactly where I was when out in the backcountry or on trails. Iwas able to make some smart decisions while hiking when it was gettinglate and I needed to figure out a new way back out. It took years formy dream of a hand held GPS with high resolution maps to finallyhappen. I highly recommend the PN-40.

speaker so soI have used this 1390t for 2 weeks, great suction cup mount, superthin, bluetooth took 2 min. to set up, all an all aok, except thespeaker sucks. Amazon should edit that description so nobody elsewill be mislead.It comes out of a weak speaker built into the GPSitself and the microphone sounds muffled to those on the other end ofthe call..Other than that, so far so good.Ok GPS, terrible speaker, City Xplorer DOES NOT WORK!
I have bought, owned, and used 7 different Garmin units of various
sizes including the 330 series that kind of evolved into the Nuvi,
Rino, and others. I wanted to try out the new City Xplorer feature in
this 1390T -> and the summary is City Xplorer JUST DOES NOT WORK!
First of all you must buy a $10 extra package per city, fine. But when
I enter a route it just spins the hour glass saying "Route Options"
forever. I waited 15 minutes, then just shut the unit off. The newest
iPhone (or iPod Touch with Wi-Fi) Google Pedestrian Maps completely
works for approximately the same amount of money and a unit that is
half the thickness, better touch screen, and this piece of junk simply
does not work. I can't get any route further than 5 blocks to "finish
calculating route", and the 5 blocks is where it just says "walk north
5 blocks". Shame on you Garmin! You used to make good products, what
happened, all the smart quality engineers left?

The GPS unit itself is Ok, but the speaker is terrible (as other
people mention). It is a step down from previous Nuvi's I've played
with, it "cracks" and sounds terrible at over 50 percent volume, which
you need to hear it over road noise.

On the up side, the "Nav Traffic" is pretty good! It works as
advertised, is easy to use, and this unit's external "bulge antenna
inside the power cord thingy" is smaller than previous Nuvi's I've
played with. No extra hidden fees and comes with lifetime Nav traffic.

This is not really a compelling upgrade from the Nuvi 265T, save your money and get the 265T, or do what I'm going to do -> start looking at other brands and praying Apple releases a Garmin killer iPod Touch with built in GPS.

Garmin GPSmap 76CSx, Great GPS!UPDATE: September 4, 2008 - Still very impressed with the 76CSxunit. It has come in real handy recently shopping for a house. All myopinions stated previously are still current. One very handy featurethe unit doesn't have that I wish it did was the ability to choose analternate route while your are traveling. This can come in handy in theevent there is a detour or you want to calculate a route around atraffic jam. This would create a by-pass route on-the-fly. Many streetspecific GPS units can do this. Although, this unit can re-route if yougo off course which is something different.The '2008 City Navigator Map Update' is not much to be desired. Ihave not noticed any significant improvement in calculated routes orupdated points of interest (POI) data over the 2007 maps release. Thesame errors that I have encounter initially are still there in the 2008release(PA, NJ, NY areas). I am hesitant to purchase the 2009 update. Iwill probably wait until the 2010 Update.The Foarm(R) case is the best protection out there still.I am completely satisfied with this unit I have purchased &recommended other similar units by Garmin. Overall, the 76CSx is stilla great unit.UPDATE: August 23, 2007 - After reading reviews about the 2008release of the Maps I decided to get. It's dropped a few times. I highly recommend Garmin GPSmap76CSx unit to anyone looking for aGPS unit for the road, hiking and/or boating. The numerous menus andfeatures are very intuitive and easy to use. The hi-res color screenmay be small compared to in-car GPSs but is very clear. The time forthe satellite lock is relatively quick. Even while indoors, I can get alock on at least 3 or 4 satellites. Buildings with metal roofs orconcrete floors above may not get any reception. This is expected ofany unit.For the road, I would highly suggest purchasing the City NavigatorNorth American v8 Maps ($112). The map extends the features of the GPSwith turn-by-turn directions, millions of points-of-interests (POI)such as fuel stations, garages, attractions, restaurants and shoppingvenues. You can even upload your own POIs to the unit as well. Don't besurprised if some of the route calculations it comes up with seem a bitodd. It will get you there though. If you miss your turn itre-calculates a new route very quickly. There are numerous websitesthat provide POI files that you can upload to your unit. You willnotice that some of the pre-installed POIs may not be up to date.Unlike other handheld GPS units, the memory is expandable. Iinstalled a 1GB microSD card ($45) in order to store vast amounts ofmap data or tracking that you may have done. The entire US is about1.5GB of information. The unit comes with a blank 128MB microSD memorycard that I moved to my cell phone (bonus).The sensors included are the electronic compass and barometer.Having an electronic compass allows one to determine ones (N,S,E,W)direction without moving. Many GPS units determine direction by changesin position coordinates. Therefore you must be moving. Optional sensorssuch has for water temperature may be plugged into the back of theunit.To protect your unit I recommend the Foarm textured, rubberized(~$20) case. The case comes with a few transparent protectors for thescreen. If you don't get this case go out and at least buy some PDAscreen protectors. For me,purchasing a GPS unit represented one of those times. I wanted ahandheld GPS unit that was best-in-class. My research led me to theGPSMap 76CSx. Factors that led to the decision: frankly, the reviewshere; Garmin's reputation; powerful satellite locking; great variety ofbase- and add-on maps; expandable storage via microSD card; altimeter;compass; battery life; transreflective LCD screen. Don't underestimatethe importance of the transreflective screen: one of the biggestconsumers of battery power is the LCD: with the backlight onfrequently, battery life drops significantly. The transreflective LCDenables you to turn off backlighting for use outdoors during the day,which significantly reduces battery draw.I like to play with a unit before reading the manual, and inplaying around I have figured out the major functions/features. It'snot the *most* intuitive unit, but I give it 4/5 stars onintuitiveness. The manual is not huge, but is a several-evening readingproject, and that's on my soon-to-do list.Initial satellite locking is pretty quick (3-4), then acquisitionof another 3-4 satellites occurs over the next several minutes. This is*indoors*, where I routinely lock 9 satellites in a townhouse. Out inthe woods while hiking, I also lock and hold at least 9 satellites. Themore satellites your unit can lock, the more accurate your coordinatesare.I started with using just the built-in basemap, which is ... basic.The first map I added was Topo 2008 USA. While the resolution is only100k, it adds a reasonable level of topographical detail for my uses(general light hiking), as well as non-routable local roads. (The roadsappear and are labelled, but the unit cannot calculate turn-by-turnrouting directions using the Topo map. For this, you must add one ofthe Navigator maps.)The unit is light, and battery life so far seems as promised (15-20hours). I have not tried rechargeable batteries, but plan to do so. Ifthey work well, fine, and if not, fine too. Alkalines are inexpensiveenough bought in bulk.Downloading maps from the computer is quite a slow process, so I'mgoing to guess the USB is 1.1 not 2.0. I downloaded the mid-Atlanticand New England region, approximately 700k of data, which took over 45minutes. I can't imagine loading the whole country. The Navigator mapsmay be smaller, since I don't believe they contain elevation data.All in all, I am very pleased with this unit. Great GPS for the price!I'm a long time TomTom user, and I bought this GPS for my wifebecause it is small, simple, and inexpensive. We've been very pleased!The SIRF star III GPS chipset is incredible! It was able to lock onto 8satellites from INDOORS! My TomTom GPS receiver is lucky to find 4signals in the backyard with a clear sky. The NAVTEQ maps used byMagellan are much more accurate in the U.S. than the outdated TeleAtlasmaps in my TomTom. I used both devices to search for 5 random addressesfrom my address book -- all of which are at least 5 years old. TheMagellan found them all flawlessly -- even those with re-mapped zipcodes in mid-2006! The TomTom found 1 of the 5, got me close to asecond, and didn't have a clue about the street names in the otherthree. (Incidentally, TomTom won't provide me with a map update becausethey dropped support for my device, which is only 3 years old!)The Magellan Maestro 3100 doesn't have all of the bells andwhistles that the more expensive devices have, but it does GPSnavigation as well as anything I've tried -- and I've tried most ofthem out there. I didn't buy a GPS to be an MP3 player and a pictureviewer -- I already have an iPod for that. Any my car stereo hasBluetooth, so I didn't need hands-free phone capability. Why pay forfeatures if you don't want/need them?The only disappointment in the 3100 is the Points of Interestdatabase. It only has 750,000 entries, whereas other competing (albeitmore expensive) devices have several million. Still, it was able tofind gas stations, ATMs, restaurants, hotels, grocery stores -- all theimportant stuff -- with no trouble. So I can't find campgrounds andbeaches -- big deal! I usually don't get a spontaneous urge to gocamping while I'm driving around anyway...A previous reviewer mentioned the SD slot. I borrowed the Magellan Maestro 3100 and found it to be a great
auto GPS. It has all the features you need in an auto navigation
system. Because it has none of the extraneous features unnecessary in
an auto GPS, the price is a deal. Magellan got it right with the
Maestro.

Favorite Features:

Entering locations turned out to be easy with the predictive input system.

Setup was super easy. I had it up and going in less than a minute
in my car. As I was borrowing it, I didn't have a manual or anything,
but all the screens were so intuitive, that was never a problem.

The screen was so easy to read. I was expecting problems in sunlight, etc. Not a chance.

Routes were calculated quickly. I intentionally missed a few turns to see how it would handle re-routing. It did so quickly.

Touchscreen was perfectly responsive.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants an entry-level auto GPS. It has all the features you'll want while driving.

Works Very WellI purchased the Golflogix GPS instead of the more popular SkyCaddiebecause the Golflogix is made by Garmin. Obviously, Garmin knows GPS.The unit is actually a re-packaged Garmin eTrex. It is very solid andsturdy. When I bought it I found that three of the courses that I playwere not mapped. I requested them and in one week they were available.Fantastic. I have also submitted questions via email and have beenanswered promptly. The unit is small and easy to use. It will incrementholes automatically when I walk to the next hole. It's easier to use, holds 20 downloaded courses (asopposed to 10), finds the course you are at (as opposed to scrollingthrough a list), is waterproof (as opposed to water resistant), costfar less to get a one year membership to downloadable courses, andturns on in seconds with distances (as opposed to minutes). The 2008model measures the distance from your last shot so you can tell how faryou are hitting each club.It's very easy to use. Just turn it on. I had no troubledownloading the courses, and I am a Mac user with the Mac Leopardoperating system. The Garmin algorithn for finding distances is quickand accurate.I really like it and can't imaging playing golf without it! Golflogix GPSI have used this item for several rounds of golf. GPS With European MapsThe Garmin GPS was a godsend on our trip to Europe. If you haveever driven into cities or small towns in Europe you will know howdifficult it is to navigate, while trying to read foreign street signs,dodging motor scooters and bicylists, finding the right exit out of aaround-about all the while being pushed along by the very aggressivedrivers behind you. But with the GPS most of that stress goes away asyou know when and where to turn and you drive through towns like anative. I was very impressed that even going through the miles longtunnels of the alps the GPS must be programmed to keep the unittracking without a satellite signal because several minutes latercoming out of the tunnel it still provides instructions. I purchasedthe pricier model 270 because of the factory installed European maps.If you purchased a GPS with only North America maps and had to load theEuropean maps the cost of those maps would be another $250. It's lessmoney to get the 270 or 370 with maps already loaded. The windshieldmounting is excellent and worked well in the rental car. The Nuviseries GPS is convenient enough in size to be carried in the pocket forwalking around the cities. But it does not work as well for pedestrianpurposes because it cannot keep bearings well as you tend to rotate thedevice and it looses it sense of direction. I read all the reviews onGPS's and chose the Garmin because of it's higher ratings for searchengine, ease of use and maps. You will immediately become an expertuser even without reading instructions with this device. It isliterally that easy to use.Nuvi 270 used in ItalyI bought the Nuvi 270 for my 24 day trip to Italy. The unit is veryuser friendly for menus and visibilty. We used our Garmin incoordination with a TomTom 910 and our unit out mapped the TomTom everytime. The mapping is great and points of interest are good, butrememeber that Italian locations are not always translated the same IE;"leaning tower of Pisa" is actually "tower pendentta. The other thingyou never want to do is hit "shortest route" when in Italy!!! You willend up driving curvy mountain roads and maybe end up on a goat trail.We almost trippled our trip time by doing this one evening. So to endthis, I highly recommend this unit if you are going to Europe and keepit when you come home, cause it has even better use on the US roads. Not for Pedestrians in France and Switzerland
I retired a couple years ago as a commercial pilot who dealt with
GPS's on a daily basis and have a factory installed unit in my Acura
TL.

I bought this unit to use as a pedestrian sight-seeing in France
and Switzerland. This review is only my experience trying to use the
Garmin Nuvi 270 as a pedestrian in European cities. I make no
supposition how it would work in a car in the USA nor in a car through
the narrow streets of Europe or as a pedestrian in US cities..

The Garmin Nuvi 270 has a pedestrian mode and is pre-loaded with
maps of Europe. At slightly over $300 the unit was very appealing so I
bought one for my trip in May 2008.

The Good:

1. The touch screen is very responsive

2. The screen is very clear and bright.

3. 3.5 inch screen, in my view, is the perfect pedestrian size.

4. The database used is good by today's standards.

5. Physically the 270, in my opinion, is the correct size for walking.

The Bad:

1. The first bad feature and by far the overriding issue is the
Nuvi 270's inability to acquire satellites in European cities .
(Without Satlilite communication the Nuvi 270 is not able to navigate.)
I read all the reviews posted on Amazon and elsewhere, although many
mentioned this issue, none seemed to adequately drive this point home
enough for me not to buy it. On our day trip to Strasbourg, France, I
held the unit out at ½ arms length for 1 1/2 hours while walking and
saw only two screens, `Acquiring satellites' or `unable to acquire
Satellites do you want to continue'. The unit never ever acquired
enough Satellites in Strasburg to even show where we were, let alone
navigate. I even stood on a round-about in the middle of a busy
intersection for 20 minutes hoping it would acquire enough Satellites
to be functional....it did not! I cannot over stress this enough....it
was useless in Paris, where it would acquire for a short time and then
lose them during the walk, in Geneva where it acquired them on the
lake, but lost them in town. In Marseilles where it acquired them going
to an island but quickly lost them in town.

2. Once acquired, satellite retention is very poor. Sometimes
aircraft GPS', as well as my Acura will take a couple minutes to
acquire satellites, particularly if the unit has been moved while
turned off, but once satellites are acquired they seldom lose
reception, if ever unless you drive through a tunnel. The Garmin Nuvi
270, on the other hand, readily loses reception.

3. There is no Operating manual available for the Garmin Nuvi 270
either in the box or on the web. Only 11 quick start booklets in 11
languages.

4. Once you have looked for a destination it now resides in
Recently found places, but cannot be deleted unless all destinations
are deleted. If there is a way I couldn't figure it out as there is no
manual.

5. When charging, the unit says it is charging but never tells you
when it is fully charged. I let it charge for over 24 hours and it
continued to display, `charging'..

6. The unit has a segmented bar that let's you know how much
battery charge is left, but Garmin obviously hasn't figured out how to
correlate that to time. A total of 5 bars, one would think 2 bars would
indicate 40% left. WRONG, 2 bars generally meant less than 20 minutes
left of usage.

7. Does not use changeable batteries, so if you're away from your
hotel, walking, you can't put fresh batteries in; coupled with not
having any real clue how much charge you have left on the permanently
installed battery, leads to a problem. (How much do I conserve, how
much charge is left in real time, etc.)

8. You can't plan your trip unless you are there. For example: If
I'm in the USA and I want to see what attractions are located around
the hotel I plan to stay in in Paris, the unit will not do it. It will
only show me the attractions located close to where the unit physically
is at that point. (Assuming you can get reception).

9. The current satellite reception strength indicator is not visible on the map screen.

10. When walking, in pedestrian mode, you have two choices for
screen orientation. One allows the map to orient in the direction you
are walking, the other North remains at the top of the screen. For the
short time my 270 was able to retain satellites, I tried both. The
unit's computing speed coupled with current satellite available
accuracy makes the mode where the screen orients in the direction you
are walking near useless. The screen near continually `hunts' for
correct orientation. (Perhaps when the next generation satellites are
all up and SA has been removed completely, this mode will work) Best to
leave it on North at the top although I could not fully evaluate this
in Paris because I never had constant satellite reception long enough.
11. The screen is easily washed out by bright sunlight.

12. No place exists on the unit to attach a lanyard; this is a
problem in that the unit's case is very smooth and can slide out of
your hand easily.

All in all the unit is the right size for a pedestrian with a nice
touch screen, but falls unacceptably short in Satellite reception
capabilities and battery longevity (3-4 hours) given the batteries
can't be changed. Assuming it found a few satellites where are you
going to charge it during a 10 hour walking tour, or a hike, or a bike
ride?

reviews. It now no longer lists if anyone found it helpful and is
buried deep.....is Amazon manipulating reviews?

Wonderful evolution of the Magellan lineI've been a Magellan user for several years - have owned four oftheir GPS systems, and always appreciate how they have improved theirproducts. This unit is my 5th, and replaces a Magellan 4040. Afterusing it for a while I've confident in saying this is the best one yet!The most visible change is the actual size of the unit. The screensize has been increased, but the unit is thinner and lighter. Verysleek appearance, and the screen is a real joy -- sharp, clear graphicseven in the sun, and bigger on-screen buttons for easy use. Themounting system has also been streamlined, and looks and works well. Itmounts very easily on a NavMat holder (basically a bean-bag system thatI got on Amazon. I'm a huge Navmat fan - makes it a snap to hide theGPS with narry a trace. Best accessory by far for any GPS).The power connector was not well thought out, however. You have toconnect it to the GPS unit AFTER you mount it in the holder. Theyshould have moved the connector it a wee bit to the side to avoid that.The only button is a slide-type power button on the top. Boot-uptime is OK -- not speedy, but not a huge delay either. It does not havea "sleep" mode, so you have to do a cold boot every time. Not a problemin real world use - by the time you get situated in your car, the unitis ready to go.Voice is clear and easy to understand. Not as natural sounding as a TomTom, but understandable.Pretty much any recent GPS unit will get you where you want to go.I've found the routing on the Magellans to be very similar to Garmins -could be because they both use the same mapping set (Navteq). TheMagellan shines, however, in features that I find helpful. Thedirection of the next turn is always visible regardless of how far awaythe next turn will be. Up until recently, Garmin did not offer this(they do now on some of their units). Sounds like a small issue, but Ifind it very helpful. The Magellan also allows you to very easilyexclude a route (or portion). That's a fairly standard featurenowadays, but Magellan allows you to do it in a snap.In terms of routing, Magellan offers four options (fastest,shortest, most use of freeways and least use). You can see all fouroptions on the map (as a summary) at the same time so you can pick thebest one for your needs. Perfect!! Love the AAA Guidebook, which is a unique Magellan feature. Letsyou get details about restaurants and other points of interest justlike the paper version from AAA. I used it a lot in my 4040, especiallywhen traveling out of town.Other unique Magellan features I appreciate is the "ding dong"sound right before a turn (incredibly accurate!) and the fact that thesoftware reminds you to "stay on the current road" when you encountermajor exits. Some find that to be nagging, but it has saved me frominadvertently exiting on more than one occasion.A new feature for Magellan is the lane guidance. Very nicely done.I've used this feature on Navigon units, and found it rather unhelpful.Magellan's implementation is far more useful, with better, clearergraphics. However, lane guidance is not available for every road.The software is also nicely done - very logical to use. If you're apast Magellan user you can pick this up and use it in a second. If not,there's a short printed user's guide in the box (plus a CD-ROM withmore in-depth info) that gets you up to speed quickly. The box alsoincludes the mount, power connector for the car, and a USB cable. Itdoes not include an AC adapter. OK, now for the bad news. When it comes to customer service,Magellan has been horrid. We're talking so bad it's almost funny. I'mhoping this situation will change - the company was bought by Mitaclate last year, and perhaps this will signal a change for the better interms of customer support. Lord knows, they couldn't get any worse.The leader, in my opinion, for customer support is Garmin. They arenice to deal with on the phone, answer emails promptly, and offerregular firmware updates. Whenever I buy a GPS as a gift I always buyGarmin since I don't want to saddle the recipient with the miserableservice that Magellan offers. It's a shame, since Magellan offers somereal benefits over Garmin, and more value for the money. Tom Tom isalso decent when it comes to support, but they use TeleAtlas maps whichare less complete than NavTeq (sp?).Bottom line -- if you're looking for a straightforward GPS at agood price, this should be on your short list. It lacks features suchas Bluetooth and an MP3 player, but for me, I want a GPS to offerguidance and not entertainment. This has a very robust feature set,great screen, and well-designed software. It also has trafficcapabilities -- did not test that feature out, so I can't comment onit.The "safe" bet continues to be Garmin. You'll pay a bit more, andget less features, but you can be assured of solid support. WhetherMagellan's new owners will put them back on the right track (if you'llexcuse the horrid, but unavoidable pun) in terms of customer service isnot yet clear. I hope so -- they make a great product!UPDATE: 5/21/09 There's a firmware update on the Magellan site. Nonew functionality (in terms of new features) but, according to therelease notes it improves overall performance. Easy to install - justfollow the included step-by-step instructions. It seems like it makesthe unit a bit faster, but that could just be my imagination. Great screen, and lots of POIs but needs to catch up to rest of the GPS marketI've used a number of GPS navigators, typically Garmin and TomTomunits. I am currently using a Garmin Nuvi 265WT and I generally findGarmin to give me the best set of features and performance for theprice, although I've not found their systems to be particularlyreliable, my first needed to be sent for repairs twice and the one I amusing currently often reboots itself randomly, particularly right whenI start it up, and often the sound fades out for no reason. So I'malways on the hunt for something that will work even better. This is myfirst experience with a Magellan RoadMate model, and I was interestedto see how it compared. I've only been using it for a few weeks, so Icannot report on long-term reliability, but will post follow-upcomments if I run into any problems in the future.PLUSESBeautiful, bright screen. Easily one of the best GPS screens I'veseen. Very sharp and bright and still visible even in bright light.Typical reverse screen for nighttime viewing. Good maps, accurate directions. Haven't run into any problems yetwhere it took me a goofy route....although I've yet to use a GPS thatdoesn't do it once in awhile! I also like that you can use a zip codewhen entering addresses. My Garmin unit makes you enter both the cityand state and thus makes setting destinations a bit more tedious thanneed be. The sound and text-to-speech on this I found very good. I oftenhave volume problems with my Garmin (sometimes it just seems tocompletely fade out), no problems at all with this. I didn't even needto turn it up all the way to hear it easily. The voice I found pleasantenough and not too computer-generated sounding. It also has nice tonesfor signaling the turns (which you could select from) and the timingfor these was spot-on. Quick launch screen which allows you to set a bunch of favoritelocations, or even better, favorite searches. So if you typically arelooking for the local coffee shop when you travel, rather than goingthrough the screens to set up the search each time you can save it as afavorite. Very useful and has a number of these already set up for youlike closest gas station.The number of POIs was quite impressive, I found a lot more localstores in my area than with the Garmin. Still not everythingthough....my church was one that was not included, even though its oneof the largest in my town. Included AAA information. Very cool search for local events,attractions, etc. with detailed information. Not sure how much I'd usethis (typically I'd research such information before leaving!) but itwas a nice touch. Multi-destination routing. Allows you to set up a complete tripwith several stops. This was very easy to use, to reorder your stops,etc. Includes maps for Canada. Not all GPS units in this price rangeinclude Canada. Not that I travel there, but nice to know I have themaps if I do!It's also nice that it uses a standard UBS cable. This seems tobecoming more standard with GPS units and makes life much easier thanhaving a proprietary cable. I'm careful to label it however, just so Idon't accidentally mix it up with all my other similar cables. MINUSESSlow startup! I've really gotten spoiled by my Garmin Nuvi thatstarted up in seconds and was ready to navigate just as quickly. Thisthing takes considerably longer to start, leaving me waiting for itbefore I can set my destination and drive off. Also, the location of the plug for the USB/power cord is just dumb!It completely blocks the mount, so that you cannot have the unitplugged in until you slide it on. This also means you then can't seewhere you are plugging it in, versus being able to just hold the unit,stick in the plug, and then mount it. I could deal with this if thereseemed to be some reason for doing it....but simply moving the plugfrom the left side to the right side of the mount would have completelysolved this problem. It just seems like it was put in the one spot thatwould annoy people! No bluetooth or voice command, no music or audiobook support.Basically very barebones on extras. This was a big step down from theGarmin Nuvi which cost almost the same, with just a slightly smallerscreen. At the very least, I really would have liked to have seen BT atthis price point. The touch screen also doesn't always respond andneeds a second or even third tap sometimes. This seemed particularlyprevalent on the Back button. Also, why do they not include a quickjump back to the main menu or map? My Garmin has this issue as well,and it's really annoying when you are searching for something that youcan't just "cancel" and go back to the main screen, but have to keepbacking page by page to return. Garmin also now has all kind offeatures you can customize that really add to the value of theirdevices. I love the ability to find an address on Google Maps and sendit to the GPS over USB. You can download a custom car which is a cutetouch (okay, so I no longer own a big SUV, but at least I can seemyself drive one virtually!) There are all kinds of custom routes youcan download, if you are the type that likes to play around with yourgadgets. The Magellan doesn't appear that have support for any of thiskind of additional stuff, and is definitely falling behind Garmin andTomTom in this area. Some things are not very intuitive and the manual is very barebones, so not much help. For instance, there was an option in thesettings for the display, but on changing it, I found that I was stuckwith just 2D display options. It took me awhile to figure out how toget it back to 3D (clicking on the main map screen). Not including the3D setting in the same place is quite confusing. One thing that really bugged me was that it wouldn't save alocation based on solely the GPS location. I've never had a GPS unitthat wouldn't do this....you just save the location and rename it tosomething meaningful. On the Magellan though, while it would let me"save" I still had to actually enter an address! Seems kind of silly torequire this when you are using a GPS which should be able to just savethe location automatically, address or no. If there *is* a way to dothis, it certainly isn't very obvious! I also found it needed to reallyget right to the location that you were navigating to in order toconsider the trip completed. Very frequently when I turn it on it wantsto resume the same trip, even though that's where I am! It should beless picky about this.The headsup display was not one of my favorites. With the Garmin, Iwas able to see my upcoming turn, estimated arrival time, currentspeed, and even would display the local speed limit (when available).The Magellan was much more bare bones. I could get the next turn, andthe time of arrival, but it uses the same space to show my current MPHso I have to toggle back and forth (while driving) if I want to seethis. I really like using my GPS as a digital speedometer so this was abig negative for me. This is definitely personal preference though.Some people may prefer the more minimal information on this screen andmore surrounding map visibility.I also didn't care for how it displays the phone number separatelyfrom the address when viewing POIs. I'm not sure why you wouldn'tdisplay the phone number on the same screen as the address, this justseems unnecessarily complicated to have them in different places. Ireally like the Garmin info display which includes everything on onepage, and also includes call buttons (since that device supportsbluetooth phone calling). I did not receive the TrafficLink with this unit, so am not able toreview how well that works. If you are not able to find a deal on thisthat includes the TrafficLink for free, that really does hurt the valuea bit. My Garmin unit included free traffic on the device (albeit withsome ads) so if I lived in an area where I wanted the traffic support,that extra $80 cost would definitely play a part in my decision as towhat device to go with (comparisons of how good each traffic serviceare notwithstanding). Overall, you'll want to evaluate it against other devices at thesame price. If you can find a good deal on it, it might be worthconsidering for the excellent display and strong database of POIs. I am satisfied, good price for a good product...I did a lot of looking around for a GPS unit and finally decided onthe TomTom One S. There were a few things that the TomTom did that Ireally wanted.1. Text to Speech. It tells you the name of the street you areabout to turn on. I like that feature a lot. Only down side is that itonly works with "Tom" the computer voice. The other voices do not offerthe text to speech capability.2. Sending Mapquest directions straight to the TomTom. I loveMapquest and I use it all of the time whenever I am planning a trip outof town. So sending destinations straight to the TomTom is a big plusfor me.3. One free upgrade after purchasing. One thing I didn't want toworry about was buying a GPS unit and then turning right around andhaving to pay more money for updated maps. I bought this unit, pluggedit into my computer, downloaded the TomTom Home software and a fewclicks later, it informed me that my TomTom already had the latest mapupdates installed. Wonderful!!! 4. Mapsharing. I am a geek, so I like to tweek and piddle andcustomize my gadgets. Having the ability to change/edit streets andlocations on the TomTom was a plus. But then to hear that I can getthose types of updates from other geeks like me is a big plus!!! Now I read a ton of reviews on different models of the TomTom and the majority of the problems people were having were:1. Speaker not loud enough.2. Problems updating the unit.3. Street names not being spoken aloud.4. Having to manually turn the unit from "daytime" background to "nighttime" background. (other units do this automatically).5. Not enough Points of Interest.I drive a full size SUV that is older. So, lots of road noise, lotsof in-cabin noise. I adjusted the speaker volume all the way up and Ican still hear the TomTom well enough. Now if I have my radio on, Ican't understand what TomTom is trying to tell me but if I am trying topay attention to directions, why would I have my radio on in the firstplace? I have had no problems updating the unit so far. (knock on wood). When I first started using the TomTom, it did not say the streetnames. So, I checked the instructions and it mentioned that only thecomputer voice allows spoken street names. So I went into preferences,voices and scrolled through the list of voices until I got to a voicethat specifically said "computer". Once that was selected, I began tohear all the street names I wanted to. Having to manually turn it from day to night mode. Sure I canunderstand people that have had other units in the past that took careof that for you and are used to it. So having to do it yourself takes acouple of clicks, big deal. Is that no different than changing thestation on the radio? Or making a call on your cell phone? Or puttingmake up on? I think sometimes people complain simply because they can.Not enough points of interest. I have heard that other units areknown for thier millions of points of interest. Can't argue with them,the TomTom doesn't have million's. But it does have the ability to addthem, which I think is helpful. Just cruising through the list ofpoints of interest to add was interesting. I added Fith Thrid BankATM's and BBQ places in AL to my list. I like to eat good BBQ and I amgoing to have to stop at an ATM to get money to pay for it so I am allset there. :DAll in all, for this being my first GPS, I like it. I probablywon't even utilize all that this unit has to offer so I would foraround $130, I am getting my money's worth. Now maybe down the road after using this unit for a couple years, Imay find that a more expensive unit with more options may be the routeI take but for now, I am happy with this unit. Great Gas Saver!When we were searching for a home, it found the easiest routes toeach one. Looked at 15/20 a day. Excellent routing!I have just replaced my TomTom One 130S with the 140S. The IQRoutes Technology dramatically improves the routing. I have ownedNavman, Mio, and Garmin GPS units. This one has the best routing yet!This is an excellent value!Edit: I just returned from a trip from Rochester, NY to Charleston, WV to Topsail, NC.I was very impressed with my 140S. It never suggested a faulty orweird route. One route it suggested in West Virginia was far superiorto the route I normally take. The voice directions always seem to be spoken at exactly the right time. "Reality views" of expressway interchanges popped up frequently. I have really come to appreciate the feature.I love that you can set voice warnings for Rest Areas. The only negative thing I have to report is that some POIs in theTopsail, NC area were shown in wrong locations. I also found this to bethe case with my Garmin 260 last year.A new section of interstate in North Carolina is in the latest map.My brother's Garmin (with the latest map) does not yet show the newroad. I have more confidence in the 140S than any GPS I have owned. Makes Navigation EasyI upgraded from the TomTom One 130 to this TomTom One 140s for the advanced lane guidance and I absolutely love it.The spoken street names are nice but no big deal (You have toselect a computer voice to get street names. The natural voice can onlysay pre-recorded things). The names are probably helpful for people whodo not want to take their eyes of the road. However, those people willmiss the absolute greatest feature which is the advanced lane guidance.It is so nice to get advanced notice that there are multiple lanescoming up and being told very clearly by means of the multiple arrowswhich lane(s) you can choose. I live in the Seattle area and found thatit will show those arrows for nearly all large intersections that havemultiple turning lanes. On the freeway you not only get the guidancearrows at the bottom, but frequently a big computer generated picturethat clearly depicts all lanes and on/off ramps with big arrows insidethe lanes you can choose. It is actually quite shocking when it thenswitches back to the standard lines view. They feel like cave drawingsby comparison. I think it is already technically possible to make thisrealistic picture view the (moving) permanent view (kind of like avideo game). All they need to do is extend their database to includethe number of lanes of a road.Two other improvements over the 130 are that you can add your ownPoints Of Interest. Although the 130 already allowed you to downloadlocations from Google Maps as Favorites, adding them as POIs willdisplay them on the map just as any other POI and reduce the clutter inyour Favorites. The other minor improvement is the ability to create anitinerary. The itinerary is basically a sequence of destinations (withsome minor editing capabilities such as adding, removing and moving adestination up or down in the list) which you can save as an itinerary.Just like the 130, the 140s is accurate, quick to draw the screen andrecalculate the directions if you stray off course. If you notice aftera while that the satellite aquisition is taking longer, connect theTomTom to your PC and update it and the aquisition will be back to afew seconds. I updated my 130 about once a month. So far I haven't noticed the IQ Routes giving me differentrouting suggestions than the 130, but I have only had it for a few daysand my trips so far may not have required a special IQ re-route. If Inotice any specially great or bad routing later, I will add it to thisreview.Good GPSThis product does exactly what it says it'll do. No problems. Justa couple of enhancements I'd like the Tom Tom folks to consider:1. The keyboard is way too compact. Difficult for me to type out anything and I constantly have to back up and start over.2. It'd be nice to give the owner the ability to delete maps he/sheknows they will never use. For example, I'll never need it in Mexico orCanada, but since you've lumped those with U.S. maps, I'm stuck withthem. It would be nice to free up some hard drive space and dump thosecountries.Still, I'm happy with what I bought. Perhaps when I buy another GPS I'll get one with a bigger screen.

A better, yet less expensive, option over standard carriers!If you are going to invest hundreds of $$$ in a GPS unit, whysettle for just an open-ended sleeve for its protection when not inuse?This carry case is of superior quality construction, has theadded benefit of a carry slot on the outside (see picture)AND has amagnetic / post style strap that securely holds your GPS in place.I was about to settle on the "standard" sleeves offered locallyfor $25 when I ran across this one. Even with Shipping and Handling, itcame in around $17.00. As a supplier, they had my case in my hand agood day ahead of my earliest expectation. An outdoor GPS receiver as revolutionary as the original eTrexBefore buying this new Venture HC, I had spent many hours trekkingwith several of the original eTrex models over the years. I think it'sfair to say that while the concept of the original eTrex was great, theexecution was frequently disappointing. It disappoints no more. The Venture HC is the eTrex perfected. Itremedies almost every shortcoming that plagued the original models. Thenew high-sensitivity receiver is amazingly effective. Countless timesI've stood in wide open spaces cursing my old eTrex because it wouldn'tacquire a single satellite. Last night I turned on the Venture HC onthe bottom floor of my two story house, and it locked onto 8satellites...through the roof and the upper floor! No more "need aclear view of the sky" messages. Amazing.The old monochrome display has become color, and the user interfaceis now substantially more intuitive, while adding even morefunctionality. The cable, which was serial on previous models, has beenupgraded to USB, another welcome improvement. The case is somewhatwider than before, but the design bears a strong resemblance to theoriginal eTrex. A basemap is included but it's just that - basic. It shows thelargest highways, bodies of water, and has some limited capability todisplay highway exit services. If you need turn-by-turn streetdirections, an eTrex is not for you. This is a GPS receiver true toGarmin's outdoor GPS heritage. Promised battery life (14 hours) is near the bottom of the rangewhen compared to the existing eTrex models, but is still perfectlyadequate and has posed no problems.One weakness that remains is Garmin's waypoint manager PC software.It has the feel and functionality of a software product released circa1994. Garmin could certainly develop a better PC interface. For $49 youcan buy ExpertGPS from Topografix, or download the free version(EasyGPS)from their website. Either is far more functional than theGarmin OEM software. Still, the software criticism is a quibble. The Venture HC itselfis great. It is a market changing product that renders all previouseTrex models (and many competitors) obsolete. Finally, an affordableoutdoor GPS receiver that I can wholeheartedly recommend.Great geocaching unit at a good price (with notes for Mac users)I was totally chessed off at Magellan when my Explorist 100 diedunder warranty and they refused to support or repair it (this was a newunit!). So I only considered Garmin based on liking my car unit.Mac Users:It's a bit tricky, but I am able to use the USB cable and the 'sendto Garmin' to automatically load waypoints from geocaching.com. Onewarning is that they have a Mac firmware web updater and it's very newand froze on my attempt to use it, which blanked my unit. [...]. I didthe update for this unit on a friends PC and it went fine.There are some Mac caching software, but none of them are workingfor me with this unit. So keep that in mind if you really want to gobeyond the web waypoint downloads. That's a bummer, since Maccachingand GeoJournal look like they'd be great.The included software does not work on a Mac, so ignore that CD.From the Garmin site, you can download the plugin for Mac to makeSafari aware of the unit so you can do the "send to Garmin' trick. Theyalso have the Mac version of their WebUpdater (the one that hosed myfirst unit) on their site. Finally, you don't need any USB drivers forTiger or Leopard OSX, so don't worry about them only being for Windowson the Garmin site.Usage:Crazy fast turn on and acquiring satellites. We are thrilled thatwe can turn it on in the car and it will start to pick up satellitesright away. Our Magellin (an cheap 100 unit) would take awhile evenoutside in cloudcover.It also seems to save all the time, as the shutdown is very fast, with no 'saving' note like our Magellin made us wait for.I guess our only complaint is that we like to use the backlight alot and that sucks batteries. It's winter now, and so many days andlocations are dim, and without the backlight, the unit can be prettydim to read. It takes 2 AA's. It also has a system pref for the type ofbattery you use (Alkaline, NiMH or LiOn), why? Maybe to only USB chargewhen they are NiMH's?? But remember to set that to the correct type.We really love auto loading the coordinates. And even with the freeaccount on Geocaching.com, we get the cache name, GC# and coordinates.That saves tons of time and mistakes. We find ourselves loading up anycache that interests us, just in case.Accuracy:The unit seems right on. Our other unit would usually be more like20-30 feet accurate in the woods, and this one led us right to thecache and showed 16' accuracy at that point under normal tree cover. Italso refreshes more often than our old unit, so it feels moreresponsive. No more going 20 feet and then seeing that the arrow justdidn't update to show we were going the wrong way, or overshot.Build:It seems solid and took our last rainy hike well. The back has abit of a gap, but the seal must lock in fine. It uses the 'D' lock, sojust half a twist to lock and unlock, which is fast and appreciated ona cold cache while changing batteries. We always had to dig to get theMagellin's ring out and turning to pop the back.Thumb toggle:If you've used the old Garmin's with button input, the toggle onthe front is really welcomed. We zip through data entry and you pushthe toggle in to accept an entry. It's also a shortcut to Mark yourcurrent location (holding down the toggle button). Another tip is thatholding down the lower left button brings up the 'Find' menu quickly.Speed:One thing I noted was that when I went just one setting more on'detail' for the maps, it really cut the redraw speed (which is a tadslow to begin with), so that was disappointing.Hope that helps someone and happy caching!for Team Spiderweb4-2Great for geocaching, astronomy!
I got this unit after much research into different brands and,
after settling on Garmin, different models. It's a great all-around GPS
at a great price. It's my first, so I can't comment on the increased
sensitivity of the HC chip, but I get plenty of coverage inside my
house, and when I step outside the accuracy goes to about 9'. I would
have liked the compass and altimeter of the Vista, but really don't
have much need for them since I'm not an avid hiker, and didn't need to
spend the extra money.

The Venture HC is great for geocaching. I took my family out on our
first hunt last weekend, and although we only had about an hour to
spare, we had a great time finding caches stashed around a park nearby.
I can see this as a fun family activity on road trips as well. The
Venture has built-in geocaching features that let you download
waypoints directly from geocacher.com (using the free Garmin browser
plugin), and even mark caches as found right on the GPS. The color
screen is very readable in sunlight. Although the Venture HC doesn't
have a proper compass, the "compass" page is very useful for closing in
on the target.

The Venture HC is also great for amateur astronomers. My
computerized telescope needs to know lat/long/time to accurately slew
to and track objects in the sky. I can get coordinates on standard
addresses on geocoder.us, but if I just want to set up at a dark site
somewhere, a GPS is a must. Rather than pay $200 to get the GPS option
on my scope, I can use this general purpose GPS and just plug the
numbers into the telescope's controller, or even connect through my
laptop. Although any GPS will give you the time and location, not all
have as nice a backlit screen as this one, a good thing when you're out
in the dark. The customizable color schemes (with automatic night mode)
and the variable backlight intensity are also great for astronomy to
keep stray light to a minimum.

If I'm disappointed with anything it is with the built-in base map.
Again, because this is my first GPS I was somehow expecting more
detail, not necessarily in terms of street names, but certainly with
respect to canals, mountains, even major cross streets etc. The only
features I've been able to distinguish are freeways, lakes and cities.
There are many mountains where I live and none of them are shown on the
map. More detailed topo maps are available, but cost anywhere from
$80-$120. I'm not subtracting any stars for this, because I'm sure all
basemaps are pretty much the same. And with 24MB of memory, there's
room for decent quality maps.

Garmin updated the firmware for the Venture in February 2008, so
one of the first things I did was download their free WebUpdater
utility to automatically install updates. I had one scary moment when
my GPS lost the USB connection in the middle of the process, and I was
worried my unit would be disabled. But after turning it off and back on
it came right back up and, after a second try, the new firmware was
installed in about 5 minutes.

All in all, I'm very happy with the quality of this unit. It feels
sturdy yet light weight, with a nice rubberized feel to it. It's also
waterproof, so no trouble using it in the rain. The interface took a
little getting used to, but after a while it becomes second nature. The
Venture lets you customize almost every screen to your taste; for
example, I wanted to have time, elevation and location on the same page
for astronomy purposes, so I set one of the screens up to show all
these fields. At $130, the price point was perfect: significantly lower
than the next model up (sacrificing only the compass/altimeter and
microSD slot), and not much higher than plain-vanilla black & white
units without geocaching features.

I highly recommend it.

Good But Not Great....I have this and used side by side with aGarmin 200 W for several weeks before returning the Garmin. Overallthis is a good product but a few annoying bugs keep it from beinggreat...here are the pros and consProsIt finds the satellites quickly and keeps the signal. The garmintook 2-3 minutes almost every time from a power up start (this was thedeal killer)The user interface is nicer and has a lot more options than the garmin.The POI database (such as the POI categories it actually has - itis missing several major US retail chains - see below) is more up todate than the Garmin I bought at same time.Allows you to set the keyboard to QWERTY mode which the Garmin did not.consThe graphics are a bit grainy compared to the garminThe bluetooth is useless, works only for datatransmission/reception and that too with very limited number of phones.No, you cannot use it as a handsfree.If you take a wrong turn or pass by your destination or do anythingto pass by your destination on a 2 lane road, it will not tell you toturn around - it will navigate you through the next set ofintersections. In rural areas this can mean a 20 mile trip instead ofgoing back 200 yards.The text to speech works very unpredictably - it pronounces somename very nicely but mangles others horribly such that you can'trecogonize it. Also it announces street names about a quarter mile before and thensimply says turn left or right when you are actually at an intersectionand want the street name to turn into. This is annoying. Very annoying.There is an SD card slot. However the unit works either exclusivelywith the SD card slot or with the internal memory. Which means that youhave to reload everything in internal memory onto the SD card whichtakes about an hour because of the incredibly s-l-o-w data transferrates.Also the internal memory is pretty much full so forget about any upgrades unless you spring for at least a 2 GB or more SD cardStrangely, TomTom doesn't know about major US retail chains likeToys R Us, Payless Shoes etc. This even after I updated the unit withthe US Retail POI database fileThe color schemes available on the unit and online are completelyweird. Seems to have been done by people with zero taste andsensiblity.The internal battery is useless in cold weather (i.e. if you leavethe unit in the car in winter). This after a few weeks. It either diesin a few minutes or doesn't fire up at all. Will have to see how itperforms in the summer.The brightness and contrast are so-so in daylight compared to the garmin 200 w Worth Its Weight in Gold We have used our TomTom XL-S on several tripsbut recently used it on a trip to Chicago. We decided on that dayalone, it had paid for itself. It got us safely and accurately to ourhotel. The next day and many, many turns later we arrived safely at aspecific parking garage we were looking for and from there to thebuilding we needed to walk to. It lets you know how long it will beuntil your next turn and in which direction you will need to go, sothat you can get in the appropriate lane. It announces the name of thestreet in advance so you know what to look for. If you've ever traveledthe highly congested streets of Chicago, you will appreciate thecomfort in knowing you can never really get lost! So what if only the"Susan or Bob" option will announce the street names. As long as I getto where I need to be, I'll gladly only listen to Susan or Bob. I can'ttell you how satisfying it is to travel in a big city and not have toworry about missing a turn because you didn't see it or because thetraffic was too heavy to get into that lane. This product takes all thestress out of traveling in unfamiliar territory. Only the computer voice reads street names The TomTom XLS is basically the same as the XLexcept for the computer voice for street names. If you select any othervoice for the directions, you won't get the "S" functionality, just thesame directions as the XL version. This wasn't spelled out in theinstructions and took me a couple days to figure out why the Britishvoice that I liked wouldn't provide street names. Additionally, theURLs on TomTom's website haven't been updated for the XLS or themanual. Hitting the URL they provide leads to a dead end webpage.Overall, it's still my favorite over the Garmin products, but it'd benice if they included a screen cover.

Excellent routing!This unit is worth buying just for the IQ routes! The mostimportant feature of any GPS is its competence in routing. I have ownedseveral brands of GPS, including Garmin and Mio. This one has the bestrouting yet! It always seems to choose a route that a local driverwould choose. Some local drivers could even learn some better routeswith this thing.The text to speech voice works well. Like other TomToms, it is veryeasy to customize in terms of the information you wish to display onthe screen. The screen could be brighter. The windshield mount does not hold as securely as one would wish. I use an Arkon vent mount. Do not update mapDon't run the free map update on this device. The map it will giveyou is larger than the internal hard drive and it will erase the mapthe came with the before you know what's happening.I have to return my unit for exchange, I still haven't used it yet.I called TT support and they said that it's a known glitch with thismodel.Nice GPS Unit, BUT BEWAREThis is a good GPS unit, but be extremely careful about it's flawof having no ability to accept a memory card. I would recommend thisproduct, but use it out of the box and do not do/accept any updates,especially map updates; there is a 50/50 chance that you will eitheraccidentally unplug your unit from computer too quickly and render ituseless, or one of Tom Tom's updates (especially the map that is toolarge for the unit) will do the job for you.Out of the box this unit is great, although it does need thesatellite coordinate application from Tom Tom to quickly findsatellites, otherwise you will be waiting several minutes each time youcarry the unit inside or power it off and on again. Pros: larger than normal screen, easy to use "tap" keyboard, large,loud speaker, boots fast, has maps that are mostly up to date out ofbox, map correctionsCons: a little bulky (for unit that does not accept external memorycard), USB input is on bottom and 1/3 inch inside unit, lack ofpost-purchase support since they created device with literally no roomfor future expansion and still haven't created map update small enoughto fit on unit, brightness sucks in direct sunlightI would recommend that anyone take a careful look at this unit. Itworks great out of the box, boots very fast, has a loud speaker and alarge screen, but I am a bit leary of the fact that no one at Tom Tomrecognized that that the map update they are recommending you use is1.9GB, while the unit only has about that much storage capability. Withthe applications such as voices, IQ Routes (which is a veryquestionable application) and some other minors apps, there isabsolutely no room for the updated map. I performed the map updateimmediately upon receiving the unit and while it took nearly two hoursto download and update (and I have a very, very fast internetconnection), my unit worked fine until last night; I attempted to checkfor and upload map corrections, but for some reason I must haveunplugged the unit a few seconds too early and rendered it useless orsomething else happened. Tom Tom support can do very little to helprestore this model as I did everything from manually backing up theunit to my computer, too flashing it with their application. I know owna nice looking GPS that does not work, but Tom Tom says they will sendme a new device after I send them the receipt. We will see, but I thinksending it back from where I purchased it is probably the best optionbecause who knows if they will every make a proper update.

Mostly Impressive - But Some QuibblesOverall, I am very satisfied with the Garmin nuvi 1350 but I do have a couple of minor complaints. First of all, I do recommend that owners/potential buyers visit theGarmin web site to read through all of the product information and toreview the FAQs. Some folks have made an issue of Garmin not includingthe USB cable with the device but this did not matter to me. Therequired cable is a standard type "A" to mini "B" USB cable. Many otherdevices use this same cable and I already own a couple of them. (I alsoheard that if you contact Garmin customer service, they may send you acable at no charge.) Other reasons to visit the Garmin site: toregister the product, to download the full PDF manual and to installthe "my Garmin Agent Plugin" for web updates. Next, my quibbles:When the 1350 is plugged into a charging device (PC or vehicle),there is no way to determine when the unit is fully charged. This isvery inconvenient. To view the charge level, you have to unplug thedevice and turn it on. Only then can you see the battery level.According to the Garmin FAQs, charge time is about 4 hours using thevehicle cable and 8 hours using the PC cable.One of the features of the 1350 is the speed limit display.However, I find this to be of limited value. The speed display isfrequently 5 to 10 mph too high compared with the actual posted speedson the roads being traveled. As a result, this throws off the estimateddestination arrival time.Finally, why I am impressed:When driving with the 1350, I never had any doubt where I was atany given time and I never had any doubt what my next maneuver would be(and isn't this the bottom line of any GPS?). The voice commands haveplenty of volume, are easy to understand and they also give youadequate lead time for upcoming turns. The commands will also repeatbut the voice is not annoying. Several times, I deliberately missed aturn to test how the 1350 would respond. It quickly calculated arevised route based on my current location. I also found the screen to be clear and easy to see while driving (in bright sun, shade and at night).The full manual states that a PDA type stylus can be used for thetouch screen. I found this to be convenient (I'm actually using astylus from a Nintendo DS.) While you can certainly use your finger onthe screen, this will leave fingerprints and smudges on the screen.Other notes:I have the 1350 sitting on my dash with the Garmin "Portable Friction Mount" - highly recommended. My 1350 came with a free case - the Caselogic MGPS-2. This case adequately protects the 1350 when it's not being used.Overall, this has been a great purchase for my business travels and I would rate the unit as four and a half stars.charging issuesI've used this GPS for several weeks now and when it is fullycharged it is absolutely great. The voice is loud and clear, the mapsare accurate and detailed. It acquires satellites quickly, even in lessthan optimal circumstances with trees overhead or tall buildingsnearby. It is easy to program and the onscreen menus are convenient. Itis thin and reasonably light and portable and the screen is big. But ithas one major problem: the cigarette-lighter charging system does notsupply enough current to charge the GPS while it is turned on. It isunbelievable that Garmin would allow their unit to be sold under theseconditions. When I received the unit I completely charged the battery (byconnecting it to my computer using a USB cable which Garmin does notsupply, but I happened to have one anyway). Then I used it in my car,always plugged into the cigarette lighter. It turns on automaticallywhenever you start the car, and it turns off automatically when theignition switch is turned off. However, over this two week period thebattery slowly discharged (without my knowledge) until it reached apoint where the unit would no longer turn on, even when plugged in tothe car charger. Assuming the unit was defective, I called Garmin and(after 20 minutes on hold) learned that the car charger is not up tothe task, and that the GPS will slowly lose its charge when it isturned on, even if you have it connected to the cigarette lighteradapter. I believe this means that if you have a long drive, perhaps 8hours or more, then the unit may not even remain operational throughoutthe full trip. Other people have made similar complaints about some ofthe other Garmin GPS units.The tech support people explained how to recover from the lowbattery situation: you do a "soft reset" which simply involves holdingdown the on/off button for 10 seconds. Then the unit will turn on, butthe battery will need recharging. I was told to do this by connectingit to my computer using a USB cable, which Garmin does not supply withthe GPS (fortunately I already had one), but I assume you could do thesame by connecting it to the car charger and making certain that theunit is turned off while it is charging.What a shame that Garmin has produced a superior product with afatal defect. I will keep mine for now, but I'm going to investigateother charging solutions. Perhaps after reading this review, thewizards at Garmin will redesign the charging system for this GPS.Update (Aug 1/09): I discovered the reason for these chargingissues: In the User's Manual, under "Troubleshooting", Garmin statesthat the Nuvi will not charge if it is in direct sunlight or if thetemperature is more than 113 degrees F (45 deg C). Since I had my unitattached to the windshield, and since I only drive during midday, it isalways in sunlight. This charging rule applies to many other models aswell; for any given model you can download the manual from Garmin, turnto the Troubleshooting section, and see whether or not they describe asimilar charging rule. (The rule is meant to avoid overheating thebattery: lithium batteries can occasionally catch fire if they areseverely overcharged or overheated.) I think this explains why somepeople have encountered charging problems and others have not: itdepends on whether or not the unit is always in direct sunlight whileyou are driving. Some people use the friction mount and their Garminsits on the console. Others drive later in the day or at night.Easier to use by far!It didn't take me long to know that I purchased a superior product.I needed the bigger volume due to my poor hearing and this has it.Also, the maps are up to date and this was a minor concern as therewere homes that did not show up on my previous model. Visual aids arewell managed and keeps you from saying "what?"I assume that this model is Blue Tooth capable but I have not beenable to pair it with my cell as yet and I am not paying someone to tellme how to do it. The manual is not as detailed as I like but I am verypleased with what it does.
